Program Description

The Organizations and Systems concentration within the International Psychology Ph.D. program provides graduates with the cultural competence and collaboration skills to design, evaluate, and lead international programs in corporations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and health- and faith-based organizations with international missions.

The Chicago Campus' Ph.D. in International Psychology—the first of its kind in the world-prepares graduates to assume leadership positions in multinational organizations or organizations with international missions. The program is unrivaled in its mission to empower students and faculty to become advocates for international psychology initiatives.

Graduates of the program develop advanced research and program evaluation skills crucial to the ability to make a difference in individual and group consequences of global events.The International Psychology program is particularly appropriate for professionals who work or desire to work for multinational corporations, international organizations, or faith-based organizations with international missions, including educators, spiritual leaders, medical personnel, mental health professionals, first responders, members of the media, and social service professionals.

This new and innovative field of psychology also addresses global issues of ecology, climate change, and the "greening" of organizations internationally. Graduates are equipped with advanced research and program evaluation skills coupled with a rich appreciation for the individual and group consequences of global events-preparing them to apply psychological principles in the development of policy, to assist individuals and organizations with understanding and collaborating with diverse cultural populations and all levels of international organizations and functional systems, and to design and evaluate the efficacy of international programs.

Fieldwork Requirements

Two international field experiences with a focus on service learning, shadowing and cultural immersion experiences. o In Year 2, a 9-14 day immersion and service-learning trip to an international TCSPP- approved site.o In Year 3, a 3-8 week service-learning experience at an organization with an international focus or mission; may be tailored to a specific area of study.
Degree
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution 
Coursework
  • Nine semester hours of predefined undergraduate or graduate psychology credit with grades earned of C or better including the following courses;
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Abnormal Psychology or Psychopathology
    • Statistics, Research Methods, Social, or other area of psychology
Additional
  • Three or more years of work experience is preferred

Sample Courses

Psychology of Organizations and Systems from a Global Perspective

Provides students with the psychological knowledge of organizations and systems from the global perspective. Topics include community psychology, social psychology, environmental psychology, international organizations, contextualizing psychology, and role of professional organizations in shaping in psychological practices.

Acculturation Psychology

Provides students with an opportunity to explore the psychological concepts of acculturation. Topics include: ethnic identity models, adaptation to multiple cultures, and the relationship between acculturation and psychological disorders.

Organizations & Systems Field Experience

Provides a field experience opportunity for students to observe and examine the functioning of organizations and systems in an international setting. Topics include organizational structures, systems, cultures and context, decision-making, leadership models, power behaviors, and communication patterns.
