The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Launches Center for African Psychology at Washington D.C. Campus Opening

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton Welcomes New Campus to the District

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 4, 2010) With its first semester just getting under way, the Washington, D.C. Campus of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP) held an opening reception on September 22, 2010 for friends, legislators, students, faculty and other stakeholders to celebrate the new Campus and the launch of its Center for African Psychology. The Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton, now in her tenth term as the Congresswoman for the District of Columbia, did the honor of cutting the ribbon and welcoming the institution to the District.

"The Chicago School brings to the District of Columbia an extraordinary and unique facility," said Congresswoman Norton. "We are especially pleased to have the Center for African Psychology, as we see its relevance both to the city and for the work of Congress. Your reach to the international community could not be more important as we see more and more people throughout the world facing disaster as a way of life."

Part of the network of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Centers for International Studies, the Center for African Psychology is the first to focus exclusively on the research, service, and policy needs of a particular continent. Activities of the Center include international scholarship and community engagement through structured international programming and study abroad; development of multicultural awareness and culturally-sensitive therapeutic approaches; and development of local partnerships and government support to establish a sustained TCSPP presence that will serve the needs of underserved populations in Africa.

Inaugural graduate programs at the new Washington, D.C campus include a doctoral (Psy.D.) program in Clinical Psychology; a master's (M.A.) in Counseling Psychology; and a master's (M.A.) in Forensic Psychology. In addition to providing a superior education to its students, the new campus promises to be a significant contributor of social services and advocacy in the Washington-Baltimore region.

"TCSPP's mission is deeply rooted in the integration of service, community, innovation, education, and diversity," said Dr. Orlando Taylor, president of the Washington, D.C. Campus. "It is not accidental that we have located our campus near the center of power of the United States-the White House-because we intend to make contributions to the field of psychology locally, nationally and internationally through the distinction and dedication of our graduates, the scholarship of our faculty, and the service contributions of our institution."
