“Starting from Scratch” Lecture Series with Dr. Richard Shweder
Thursday, January 24, 2008—6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., 5th Floor, Washington Room

The Starting from Scratch lecture series was created to be a forum for prominent scholars, intellectuals, artists, entrepreneurs, activists, and community leaders to speak about the psychological dimension of their experience with starting a socially important enterprise from the ground up. Concepts such as “invention,” “creativity,” “inspiration,” “choice,” “pressure,” “satisfaction,” and “self-fulfillment” will be illuminated from the particular professional and individual perspective of each speaker.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Richard Shweder is a founder of the field of modern cultural psychology and author of several books including Why Do Men Barbecue?: Recipes for Cultural Psychology and Thinking Through Cultures: Expeditions in Cultural Psychology. He received a Ph.D. degree in social anthropology from the Department of Social Relations at Harvard University in 1972, taught a year at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and has been at the University of Chicago ever since.
