Description of Organization
The Galileo Scholastic Academy of Math and Science opened in 1991 to provide effective and innovative educational programs to students formerly attending overcrowded schools. The majority of the students come from Chicago’s West Side community: the ABLA Homes, a predominantly African-American community; the Pilsen area, which is predominantly Latino; and the University Village area, which has residents from various ethnic groups.

Type of Project(s)

Tutoring/Mentoring

  • Pair up with a classroom teacher and work with the school’s literacy specialist
  • Tutor and mentor 6-8th graders
  • Conduct outcome evaluation of the program 
  • Work with the school counselor to mentor students who are in need of psychological support
  • Meet with teachers, the literacy specialist, and the school counselor on a monthly basis
  • Psychoeducational Workshops/Groups

  • Provide psychoeducational workshops/groups for relevant topics such as conflict resolution, grief/loss, parental divorce, and anger management.
  • Receive training and consultation from the school psychologist/social worker.
  • Organization Requirements

  • TB test and Illinois Department of Human Services background and fingerprinting checks
  • 9-month commitment
  • Meet with the school literacy specialists on a monthly basis
  • Attend a shadowing class provided by School Psychology program
  • Number of FWS/Volunteer Positions Available:  10
