All research conducted at The Chicago School must first be reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The mission of IRB is to assure that ethical guidelines for research are followed. IRB reviews each research proposal and will either approve the proposal or make a formal request for changes to meet APA ethical guidelines for human subjects research. The committee currently consists of five members, some of whom engage in original research in addition to their academic responsibilities.
Applications for review of research are accepted by IRB at any time, and are reviewed by the committee as time permits. All applications should use the IRB Application Cover Sheet and follow the steps listed below.
Application Process:
- Read the cover sheet instruction document.
- Complete the cover sheet (with appropriate signatures).
- Outline your research using the 18-point IRB guide.
- Attach any auxiliary materials (the questionnaire you plan to use, permission letters from data collection sites, etc.) to the above documents.
- Make three copies of the packet materials described in steps 1-4 and place them in Dr. Evan Harrington’s mailbox on the fourth floor for an initial review. If your proposal meets the requirements for a full committee review, you must submit two additional copies of your proposal packet.
Applicants should plan ahead, as IRB member schedules and the volume and complexity of proposals fluctuate. Most applicants will hear back from the committee within 2-4 weeks.
