Latinos represent our nation’s largest and fastest growing ethnic group—yet there exists a troubling shortage of culturally competent mental health professionals prepared to meet those needs. There are only about 29 Latino mental health providers per 100,000 Latinos/as with mental health needs in the United States (SAMSHA, 1999)
The Chicago School has developed both a master's-level concentration and two certificate programs to meet the enormous need for culturally competent mental health professionals trained in the assessment and treatment of Latino clients. The programs are open to individuals from any racial/ethnic background, including those who do not speak Spanish.
In addition to learning the unique cultural aspects of Latino mental health, students have the opportunity to take elective language courses and/or participate in an optional summer immersion experience in a Latin American country.
