M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Latino Mental Health Specialization

Intended not only for Spanish speakers or Latino/a providers, the Latino Mental Health Concentration offered by our Counseling Psychology graduate programs is designed to provide formalized training and specific education in the areas of assessment and treatment of Latino/as clients and their families. The emphasis of this concentration is on understanding cultural factors that interact with Latino/as’ mental health and the integration of that knowledge into the clinical work with Latino/as. Therefore, the main goal of this concentration is to develop the necessary competencies needed for the understanding and provision of culturally responsive care to Latino/as. Students interested in graduate programs in Counseling Psychology with this concentration will begin taking courses immediately the first semester.

Enrolling in one of The Chicago School’s Counseling Psychology graduate programs will give students the opportunity to learn a practitioner-focused curriculum taught through a combination of theoretical classroom experiences, as well as participating in training sessions set in real-world environments. Choosing a Latino mental health concentration will provide students with outstanding out-of-classroom experiences interacting with Chicago’s Latino population in a dynamic urban environment. This real-world training will help students understand and appreciate this population’s culture, as well as provide students with an active learning experience they can use as the foundation for their Counseling Psychology expertise.

Every member of the Latino population has their own unique lifestyle. Because of this, each patient’s mental health needs will vary. Graduates of our Counseling Psychology graduate programs will possess the skills and research methodologies they need to maintain a broad knowledge of current information related to both the clinical psychology and counseling fields.

Students of our Counseling Psychology graduate programs will learn the theoretical frameworks and scientific bases of master’s level clinical psychology from an experienced faculty of working professionals. Our faculty bridges the field of clinical psychology and the counseling profession to provide graduates with the proper skills they need to treat mental health in the Latino populations they will encounter in their professional work. All Counseling Psychology graduate programs from The Chicago School strive to create an understanding and appreciation within students of how population diversity and cultural issues impact the field of clinical psychology. This holds particularly true when concentrating on Latino Mental Health. Our graduate programs in Counseling Psychology will provide students with the essential diagnostic, therapeutic, and consultative skills necessary to work with many diverse populations, including Latinos, afflicted with a variety of emotional and psychological conditions.
