Naomi Ruth Cohen Fellowship

The Naomi Ruth Cohen Foundation is a small family foundation established in memory of Naomi Cohen who had bipolar disorder and took her life in 2000. The foundation's goal is to overcome the stigma attached to mental illness through educational programs and support for organizations and institutions, such as The Chicago School, engaged in mental health research, education, self-help, anti-discrimination, and advocacy.

Award: $5,000

Who is Eligible? Continuing Clinical Psy.D. students not on internship with at least 32 earned credit hours and a GPA of 3.7 

Application Deadline: May 15

Notification: June 30

Fellowship Requirements and Selection Criteria:

  • Essay: 400+ word essay that describes commitment to the field of mental health, experiences (educational, research, practical and personal) in which you have been involved with regards to mental health awareness and removing the stigma associated with mental illness
  • Personal Statement: Statement should be focused on how, as a mental health professional, you will be able to help reduce stigma and stimulate help-seeking behaviors to increase the number of those accessing mental health services
  • Special consideration will be given to those applicants with a family member who has a mental illness

Recipients of the award will:

  • Attend a Naomi Ruth Cohen Foundation Board meeting
  • Participate as a presenter or assist in an event on mental health awareness for the Naomi Ruth Cohen Foundation
  • Design and incorporate a learning activity to be included in a Chicago School or other community organization event
  • Notify the Naomi Ruth Cohen Foundation of his/her employment subsequent to graduation
