Gender Diversity: Supporting Transgender & Gender-Nonconforming Children & Adolescents

As visibility for gender diversity increases, more gender nonconforming & transgender youth are seeking mental health care & support. This workshopwill describe best practices for medical & mental health care for gender-nonconforming & transgender youth within multidisciplinary settings; topicscovered will include gender-related terminology, gender identity development, & various philosophies of care for youth with gender dysphoria.
About the speakers:
- Marco Hidalgo, PhD, Medical Psychologist, Division of Adolescent Medicine, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago; Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine:
Dr. Hidalgo specializes in treating mood, anxiety, and stress-related conditions among gender and sexuality-diverse youth. He regularly staffs themulti-disciplinary Gender Development Clinic, and occasionally, he staffs a clinic for youth with differences of sex development. Dr. Hidalgo’sresearch examines health behavior, mental health, HIV prevention, and gender identity development in LGBT individuals.
- Lisa Simons, MD, Attending Physician, Division of Adolescent Medicine, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago;Instructor of Pediatrics, Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine
Dr. Simons completed her pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and her fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Children’s Hospital ofLos Angeles, where she trained at the Center for Transyouth Health and Development, one of the country’s largest clinics providing care for gendernon-conforming and transgender youth. Dr. Simons provides direct clinical care as a physician in the Gender and Sex Development program.
