It is likely that psychologists will encounter topics of human sexuality in their practice considering the vast intersection between psychological and sexual wellbeing. Despite this, most doctoral clinical psychology programs do not require, nor do they offer, courses in human sexuality. The absence of formal training in this topic has been correlated to psychologists feeling unprepared to effectively address sexuality issues with clients, supervisees, and students. This presentation will describe the relevance and importance of topics of human sexuality to the field of psychology and will introduce actionable steps and strategies teachers and supervisors can take towards integrating these topics into future training.
Eliana Wool, Psy.D. obtained her Masters and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. During her undergraduate study at Syracuse University, Dr. Wool was trained in methods of delivering sexual education to undergraduate students and served as a group facilitator for the university’s human sexuality course. Her studies in sexual education continued into her graduate career, and her research culminated with the completion of her dissertation titled, “Preparedness of Doctoral Clinical Psychology Program Faculty to Integrate Topics of Human Sexuality into Academic Training.” Dr. Wool has worked in a diverse collection of settings, including a community mental health center, therapeutic day school, private elementary school, outpatient hospital clinic, and most recently, at a private group practice. She will be presenting at the 2017 American Psychological Association (APA) Conference in Washington, DC. Dr. Wool is an adjunct in the Clinical Psychology Department at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
