Metacognitive Reflection Insight Therapy: Integrative Recovery-Oriented Psychotherapy for Adults with Serious Mental Illness

Participants will learn why and how individual psychotherapy can impact metacognitive capacity in adults with severe mental illness.Participants will learn the basic procedures for using the Metacognition Assessment Scale – Abbreviated (MAS-A) and become familiar withits psychometric properties. Participants will also become familiar with a form of integrative psychotherapy referred to as MetacognitiveReflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT). Case studies, qualitative studies, and the results of open trials which support the use of MERIT willbe presented.

Paul Lysaker, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience providing recovery based services to adults with seriousmental illness. He is an author of over 350 peer reviewed papers on subjects related to serious mental illness, an author of a monographpublished by Oxford University Press, and Co-Editor of volumes of collected papers on metacognition and recovery from serious mentalillness published by Routledge Press and Elsevier Press. Dr. Lysaker is on the editorial board of multiple prestigious peer reviewedjournals including Schizophrenia Bulletin, the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Psychosis, the Journal of Clinical Psychology, andPsychiatry Research.
