Motivational Interviewing: An Introductory Workshop

This program will introduce participants to the theory, principles, and skills of motivational interviewing (MI). Participants will engage in a sequence of learning activities to develop and refine clinical skills and to begin a process for developing proficiency in MI, including the four major processes – engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning.
About the speaker: Milton Fuentes, Psy.D, Clinical Psychology, Professor and Chair of the Clinical PsyD Program, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology – Washington, DC Campus, received his MA in Psychology with a focus on Latina/o Psychology from Montclair State University and his Psy.D. in clinical psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. He completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in clinical and community psychology at Yale University and post-doctoral training in epidemiology at Columbia University. Dr. Fuentes is currently a Professor and Chair of the Clinical PsyD Program in Washington, DC. He is a founding member and former president of the Latino Psychological Association of New Jersey and the 2012 President of the National Latina/o Psychological Association. Dr. Fuentes’ research interests are in the areas of Latina/o and multicultural psychology, child and family psychology, motivational interviewing, and pedagogy. Dr. Fuentes serves as a consultant to several programs, including the Puerto Rican Family Institute and the Violence Prevention Office of the American Psychological Association, where he serves as the Director of the ACT Mid-Atlantic Regional Center.
