Meeting Pediatric and Adolescent Needs in Psychopharmacology: Access, Benefits, Controversies, Risks, and Improving Treatment Efficacy

In this presentation, psychotropic medications that are commonly prescribed by psychiatrists, and perhaps to a greater extent, by pediatricians and family practitioners will be addressed. Issues of childhood access will be discussed along with the urgent need to train prescribing psychologists to accurately assess childhood Attention Deficit Disorder, depression, early onset psychosis, and other childhood disorders using appropriate behavioral and psychological interventions. Controversies regarding the use of psychotropic medications will be presented. The importance of developing appropriate collaborative treatment plans based on a child’s presenting signs and symptoms will be discussed. Case examples will be provided and recommendations for enhancing the training of prescribing psychologists will be addressed. Issues regarding the need of training prescribing psychologists to work with diverse and multicultural populations will also be discussed.
