Biography

Gregory Canillas, Ph.D. currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Clinical Psychology (Psy.D) program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology's Los Angeles campus. Dr. Canillas' clinical work and research has focused on children and adolescents, children in foster care, family systems, domestic violence/trauma, couples therapy/relationship issues and LGBTQ clients. He has previously served on the faculty of Pepperdine and National Universities, where he taught in the MFT program. He also previously served as Program Director at a non profit mental health agency, where he oversaw the child and adult therapy programs, the CALWORKS mental health and the Homeless CALWORKS Families Project. Dr. Canillas has also served a Clinical Psychologist with Roybal Family Mental Health and MacLaren Children's Center, which are programs directly operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.

Dr. Canillas has worked in a variety of capacities with adults, college students, as well as with children, adolescents and families involved in the foster care system, including as a Children's Social Worker with the Department of Children and Family Services, and later as the Clinical Director of a family preservation program. He has also served as a program director of a pregnant/parenting adolescent program. Dr. Canillas served as a Lecturer at Loyola Marymount University, where he taught in the undergraduate psychology program, Antioch University-Los Angeles, Los Angeles Southwest College and the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Dr. Canillas also serves at Co-Chair of the Commission for Youth and Children in Long Beach, California. As a Commissioner, he is charged with developing services and programs for children, youth and families and advising the mayor and city council on services for this population. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, American Psychoanalytic Association, Asian American Psychological Association and Association of Black Psychologists.
