The mental health paradigm has undergone a gradual but critical shift in recent years. Our now-outdated view of mental illness—with its misunderstood roots and its damaging reliance on isolation, over-medication or stigmatization—is finally giving way to the holistic view that mental health is just one essential and intertwined aspect of physical health and general well-being.
Psychology professionals have amassed evidence of the toll that depression, anxiety and a host of mental health concerns take on our health: on our blood pressure, digestive systems, sleep patterns and our ability manage chronic health conditions such as asthma, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
At The Chicago School, we have adopted the mantra that there is “No Health Without Mental Health.” As we train the next generation of psychology practitioners, we ensure that each has a strong understanding of integrative health care and is prepared to work in tandem with medical professionals in meeting patient needs.
Remember, life is short. Let’s each do our part to make it the best we can, for ourselves and for those around us.
