Happy Cinco de Mayo

A day to celebrate, a community to celebrate

While most Americans often mistake Cinco de Mayo for Mexico’s Independence Day, which is Sept. 16, that’s not accurate. Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s underdog victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The triumph inspired Mexicans and, six years later, the French were finally driven out of Mexico for good.

And while it may not be a major holiday in Mexico, it has become a significant time to celebrate Mexican culture in this country. A popular myth maintains that much of the excitement over Cinco de Mayo in this country was sparked by a beer company’s ad campaign many years ago. That may be true, but many Mexican immigrants and those of us with Mexican roots have embraced the holiday to celebrate with pride Mexico’s culture, history and recently, the accomplishments of Mexicans who have found a new home here.

And while the health crisis will surely impact many party plans – we hope you find an exciting but safe way to celebrate with your families.
