Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Daniel Cortes

Daniel Cortes had always wanted a Ph.D. When he was deciding between programs, he chose The Chicago School of Professional Psychology so he could continue working as a deputy in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Yet he needed to add another thing to an already packed schedule filled with classwork, his career, and his family: battling cancer.

“One of the first things that everybody asked me is, you’re going to drop out of school right? And I kind of fought back on that. I thought, why? I’m not getting any younger and if I’m going to die, I’d rather die with a Ph.D. than not.”

In 2014, despite his circumstances, Dr. Daniel Cortes received his Ph.D. in Business Psychology.

“If I had five years to live, one year to live, or 50 years, I learned to never waste a day. Do things you enjoy and do things that help out other people.”
