Building a tailor-made career

How I/O alum Dr. Amera McCoy made a career that is perfect for her

Dr. Amera McCoy knew that sitting at a desk doing the same kind of work over and over was not going to work for her personality. Only a career that challenges her, offers variety and calls for creativity was going to work. She’s found all of that as a business coach, celebrity ghost writer and business owner.

Choosing the Right Career

Amera McCoyDr. McCoy has worked in the financial industry for 11 years, she explains, “I researched various fields before landing on the one that represented exactly what I wanted to do. I always wanted to contribute to projects, fix them, challenge things and move to the next project. I found that IO psychology offered the opportunity to understand organizations in a way that would allow me to move fluidly through different challenges. It was a risky yet obvious choice for me to take the path that would promote the career I wanted to create.”

Writing for Stars

While working in the financial industry, Dr. McCoy started writing for clients. She had her first major book release in 2015. “I’ve been writing my entire life; it is something I have always loved doing. I started with poetry and in 2005 someone asked me to write for them. Since then I have been writing for clients. I would take on anything a client wanted because I wanted to refine my skills. The celebrities came out of referrals. They referred me to their friends and family so my circle in the entertainment industry grew organically” says Dr. McCoy, who has written for many celebrities like Syleena Johnson.

Coaching and Culture

Starting her company, McCoy Consulting LLC was only a natural progression for this Chicago School alum. “McCoy Consulting was born out of the fact that I like to make everything formal. If you are going to continue to attract high-profile clients, you need to have a brand identity. Therefore, my brand must supersede the meeting you have with me,” Dr. McCoy says.

It comes as no surprise that Dr. McCoy, who wears so many hats effortlessly, got inducted into Forbes Coaches Council. “Forbes Coaches Council is a group of business coaches that have built their businesses to a point where they are considered thought leaders in their areas of focus,” she explains. “Even coaches have coaches. So not only do I participate as a coach in the council, offering my thoughts and experience to the latest business topics, I am also coached by peers in the council. It provides me a diverse experience of coaching.”
