Meet Frankie Wilson; A Ted-Talker, communications expert, Ph.D. student and a family man who loves Applied Behavior Analysis

When meeting Student Frankie Wilson, a warm sense of gratitude is the first thing that stands out. And under this layer of thankfulness, you’ll find a man with a great zest for life.

“I’m the man that has lived a thousand lives. I have been able to wear a lot of hats in a short amount of time,” says Frankie. After careers as a singer, a professional speaker, an accountant, and entrepreneur. Frankie is now exploring psychology – specifically – applied behavior analysis (ABA).

After years working as a radio show host, now Frankie wants to combine his expertise in communications with psychology. “I apply behavior analysis to help clients understand how behavior works, understand some of those principles. And how it can work towards growing their business strategy, marketing and communications,” he says.

How does Frankie use ABA?

Student Frankie,  founded Vision Media Communications, a media content company. He likes how ABA solutions are easily applicable to so many areas of our lives. “The structure of the science of applied behavior analysis really can touch many things. Like a multitude of facets throughout our lives from personal habits to learning disabilities. What I learned through research was that there are a series of things. There are tasks needed to be accomplished for change to occur and those changes become new habits”.

He chose ABA, not just for expanding his business, but also for serving the community.

“I am trying to work in the field of criminal justice and I have a very serious interest in trauma as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to move into that next.”  Frankie credits Dr. Michael May, the ABA Dept. Chair in Dallas of The Chicago School for instilling the interest of working with the justice system in him.

Using ABA in personal life

And so Frankie’s love for ABA has trickled into his personal life as well. “I really like challenges. Being able to succeed is important to me. So  I love how [ABA] has changed my life. I was overweight and made unhealthy lifestyle choices. Thus, I used the principles of ABA to change my habits,” he says.

However, ABA doctoral candidate Frankie feels his biggest achievement is being a good father to his daughter Zoe and his three-week-old son, Ellington. Having a newborn has been quite challenging to Frankie. “I’ve learned a lot of breathing and mindfulness exercises. Exercise changes everything, it changes the way my body operates.” Says Frankie on how he manages parenting stress.

So how does he do it all? Having purpose is his motivator. “Purpose will really give you what you need to continue moving. And give you the energy and excitement. Even when you’re in the midst of something dark, in the middle of the degradation, you find yourself attached to something that you love. For me, it is having purpose.”
