Kate Mahoney, LCSW, executive director of the Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute at The Chicago School, died earlier this year after a battle with cancer. She had joined NRCI in 2017.
As executive director of the institute, Mahoney was devoted to reducing the stigma of, and providing support for families affected by, mental illness. She developed new strategic partnerships, increased attendance at the annual community mental health conference, and secured greater outside funding for the institute. She also worked with the city of Evanston, Illinois, to increase mental health programming opportunities for underserved populations.
Chicago Campus Dean Margie Martyn, Ph.D., says, “I will always remember Kate as the most positive person, a true team player, and someone who truly believed in The Chicago School’s mission of education, innovation, service, and community.”
Honors Mahoney received in the course of her 30 years in the field include the Nyswander/Dole Award for her leadership in combating the opioid epidemic as well as recognition from Mental Health America and the Illinois Association of Behavioral Health.
“The Chicago School community feels the loss of Kate deeply. We will ensure that her memory, and the work she was so dedicated to, live on through all our efforts at NRCI,” says Michele Nealon, Psy.D., president of The Chicago School.
The work she did on behalf of NRCI will continue to be reflected in its widening impact. She is remembered by all who knew her as a tireless advocate for mental healthcare and as a respected member of The Chicago School family.
