TCSPP graduate honored in Crain’s Chicago’s 2018 class of ‘20 In Their 20s’
Veronica Appleton, a TCSPP student, has accomplished two major goals in 2018: graduating with a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership and being honored as one of Crain’s Chicago’s ”20 In Their 20s,” the latter of which aims to honor 20 young changemakers in business, technology, and innovation. Appleton’s dissertation on implicit bias in advertising, public relations, and marketing teams may be one of many driving forces in how she was chosen.
According to Crain’s Chicago, her job is to “change advertising.” Through We Are Unlimited, Appleton—along with a five-person HR team—represents people of color, women, veterans, and the LGBTQ community. We Are Unlimited, which was founded in 2016, partners with other diversity organizations to scout, hire, and keep candidates seeking to work within the advertising realm who were too often overlooked.
Appleton is focused on broadening that spectrum, not just for adults but children too. The adjunct professor from DePaul University has completed speaking events geared toward teens, including for the Chicago Urban League Teen Conference and at Thornwood High School. Appleton is also the author of two children’s books: Journey to Appleville and the upcoming book Tu-Tu Goes to School.
