Their addictions are to alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs or, increasingly, to prescription drugs\u2014the very medications that at one time were ordered to help improve\u2014rather than risk\u2014their health.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While 3 million Americans were treated last year for addiction, the vast majority of people battling these disorders did not seek\u2014or, in fact, actively resisted \u2014treatment.<\/li>\n<li>100 people\u2014including teenagers and otherwise reasonably healthy adults\u2014 die <strong><em>every single day<\/em><\/strong> of drug overdoses; this is a rate that has <strong><em>tripled<\/em><\/strong> in the past 20 years.<\/li>\n<li>More than 90% of those with addictions began smoking, drinking or using illegal drugs before the age of 18.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, we work with dozens of agencies and clinics combating this problem and every year we graduate hundreds of professionals who are ready to tackle the issue head on. But it\u2019s not enough.
