Dr. Sandra Siegel<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>a self-described flower child<\/span>\u00a0who always knew that she would one day work in mental health.\u00a0<\/span>And though the road\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>as long and varied,<\/span> it was an enriching one. Th<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>licensed counselor and psychologist<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has at various times in her life been a band manager, a drug counselor and a social justice advocat<\/span>e.\u00a0<\/span>A volunteer position at the former Chicago State Hospital introduced her to the mental health field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI saw <\/span>these people standing out by a<\/span>\u00a0fence asking for money and cigarettes, and I got curious, so I went in<\/span>,\u201d s<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>explains with\u00a0<\/span>a fond smile.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe volunteer department<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>put me to work right away.\u00a0<\/span>I was on a closed unit,\u00a0<\/span>and it was really mind blowing! There were 250 men…yelling, talking to themselves, etc. I thought<\/span>\u00a0to myself<\/span>: \u2018Should I go in there?\u2019\u00a0<\/span>But\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0stepped over the threshold and discovered that I loved it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Th<\/span>e affinity she discovered <\/span>stayed with her as her path veered in an entirely different direction.<\/span>\u00a0The Blues were calling, Chicago Blues specifically.\u00a0<\/span>Just out of high school at the time, s<\/span>he immersed <\/span>herself in <\/span>the genre,\u00a0<\/span>and the counterculture of the 1960s that would produce some of America\u2019s first integrated bands.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She was also married to a musician.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>My husband Corky and other y<\/span>oung, white musicians were joining older black Delta musicians and playing together<\/span>\u00a0here in Chicago<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It was\u00a0<\/span>such\u00a0<\/span>a hopeful time and feeling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The philosophy was p<\/span>eace and love.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her husband fronted the b<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0Siegel-<\/span>Schwall. A<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>their manager, she\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>laimed<\/span> no experience<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>but\u00a0<\/span>managed to book the band at venues like the Fillmore in San Francisco\u00a0<\/span>and get them\u00a0<\/span>engagements<\/span>\u00a0with some of the era\u2019s biggest stars<\/span>, including\u00a0<\/span>Jimi<\/span>\u00a0Hendrix<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and Santana.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It was quite an amazing time.\u00a0<\/span>We got to play with very talented musicians and\u00a0<\/span>Janis Joplin\u00a0<\/span>became\u00a0<\/span>a good friend<\/span>\u2026I was really fortunate to <\/span>experience th<\/span>at.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, the desire to help others called to her and <\/span>she trained at the Haight<\/span>–<\/span>Ashbury Clinic to help those addicted to acid.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Being on the road cemented\u00a0<\/span>my\u00a0<\/span>goal<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0I knew in my heart I was going to\u00a0<\/span>come back and work with mentally ill people, I just didn\u2019t know when.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After ten years<\/span>, s<\/span>he came back to Chicago and\u00a0<\/span>worked to get an associate\u2019s degree in nursing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Going on to complete a doctorate in psychology, Dr. Siegel began\u00a0<\/span>an impressive career \u2013 one\u00a0<\/span>in which<\/span>\u00a0she always sought to make a\u00a0<\/span>positive\u00a0<\/span>difference. She worked as the director of community health at o<\/span>ne of the city\u2019s b<\/span>usiest trauma\u00a0<\/span>hospital<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and started the justice program at\u00a0<\/span>a mental health agency\u00a0<\/span>where\u00a0<\/span>staff went\u00a0<\/span>into jails and prisons to\u00a0<\/span>work with peopl<\/span>e with serious mental illness.\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>he ev<\/span>en\u00a0<\/span>worked with\u00a0<\/span>the Chicago Public Defender\u2019s Office.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I was an expert <\/span>mitigator<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It was my\u00a0<\/span>job to work with the client, and t<\/span>o tell the<\/span>ir<\/span>\u00a0story to the judge, jury or states attorney<\/span>. I had to tell them<\/span>\u00a0why they shouldn\u2019t be put to death.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now an associate<\/span>\u00a0professor in Counseling Psychology<\/a><\/span>, Dr. Siegel still makes service<\/span>\u00a0to community a part of her life, and involves her students.<\/span>\u00a0She offers group therapy for men at\u00a0<\/span>Breakthrough<\/span>\u00a0Urban<\/span>\u00a0Ministries<\/span><\/a>, an agency devoted to helping individuals and families affected\u00a0<\/span>by poverty, and mixed group<\/span>\u00a0therapy at <\/span>Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center<\/span><\/a>, an organization which strives to help\u00a0<\/span>individuals struggling with substance abuse.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI have my students create the group<\/span>s<\/span>, and they<\/span> spend their summers running group therapy.\u00a0<\/span>It helps them to see the world through a different lens, and that\u2019s important for anyone who wants to use their career to help others.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
