\"\"Andrew Currey is one of the lucky 2,100 students awarded the Fulbright Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year. A 2019 graduate of the Chicago Campus\u2019s<\/a> I\/O Program,<\/a> Andrew began working on his application in 2018.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been more than a year in the making,\u201d he explained<\/span>\u00a0just before he left for a tour of Asia<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge undertaking. I applied in October of 2018, but I was meeting with\u00a0<\/span>Breeda<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>McGrath\u00a0<\/span>{Dr.\u00a0<\/span>Breeda<\/span> McGrath is The Chicago School\u2019s Online academic dean and the administrator of the Fulbright program at The Chicago School} for months before that.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>long process and<\/span>\u00a0hard work<\/span>\u00a0resulted<\/span>\u00a0in Andrew\u2019s placement in the Binational Bu<\/span>siness Internship Program. Unique among Fulbright opportunities,\u00a0<\/span>the program takes a cohort of 16\u00a0<\/span>Fulbrighters<\/span>\u00a0and places them in internships in Mexican companies and gives them an opportunity to continue their studies at a Mexican university.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Andrew will intern at Casa Dragones<\/span>\u00a0and take MBA courses\u00a0<\/span>at the\u00a0<\/span>Instituto<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Tec<\/span>nologico<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Autonomo<\/span>\u00a0de Mexico.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cMost Fulbright programs focus on studying or conducting research<\/span>,\u201d Andrew explained. \u201c<\/span>Th<\/span>e Binational Business Internship Program\u2019s fo<\/span>cus is the internship. I\u2019m\u00a0really excited. I\u2019m interested in international business, so getting to work in Mexico and getting an understanding of the business culture of another country is ideal. I can improve my Spanish language skills, immerse myself in the culture and eventually<\/span>\u00a0use the experience to propel myself<\/span>\u00a0in my career.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government\u2019s flagship international educational exchange program and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.\u00a0<\/span>Andrew does not take this goal<\/span>\u00a0lightly and is honored to have been awarded the opportunity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur relationship is kind of tense with Mexico right now, and it\u2019s a privilege to\u00a0<\/span>go and project\u00a0<\/span>a positive image. Part of the Fulbright mission is to serve as an ambassador, and I\u2019ll be able to do<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>. I\u2019ll be fulfilling my own goals and living up to Fulbright\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew also hopes to gain an understanding of what motivates Mexican employees and how to best support the mental health and well-being of the LatinX community in the workplace.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked in corporate America and didn\u2019t feel like I was working with a sense of purpose or\u00a0meaning, or\u00a0contributing to something bigger than myself. This is an opportunity to do something impactful.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
