I\u2019ve been thinking about\u00a0<\/span>health inequality. Health is about more than luck. Yes, it\u2019s about good genes but it\u2019s also about lifelong access to the factors that contribute to our well-being\u2014good nutrition, a safe and healthy environment, medical care when we need it, and insurance to cover the\u00a0<\/span>sometimes-<\/span>astronomical costs of good health. Not everyone is lucky enough to have all of this.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While the Affordable Care Act has <\/span>helped level<\/span>\u00a0the playing field in terms of medical access<\/span>\u00a0and insurance coverage<\/span>, there<\/span>\u00a0are many\u00a0<\/span>determinants of health that still need\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>o be addressed<\/span>: the<\/span>\u00a0millions of Americans who live<\/span>\u00a0in food deserts, where fast food and liquor stores are more accessible than\u00a0<\/span>supermarkets and\u00a0<\/span>fresh produce, and where\u00a0<\/span>constant stress takes its toll on families living in violence-ridden neighborhoods.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Environmental stress alone has been found to have a profound impact on h<\/span>ealth dispariti<\/span>es, and is associated with greater incidence of\u00a0<\/span>childhood asthma, hypertension, substance abuse, diabetes, obesity and depress<\/span>ion<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We can\u2019t eliminate health inequality overnight, but we can\u2014and must\u2014focus on righting the wrongs that have left so many Americans\u00a0<\/span>facing<\/span>\u00a0barriers<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>hat put them at greater risk of<\/span>\u00a0illness, poor quality of life and lower life expectancy.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Remember, life is short.\u00a0 Let\u2019s each\u00a0<\/span>do<\/span>\u00a0our part\u00a0<\/span>to make<\/span>\u00a0it the best we can, for ourselves and for\u00a0<\/span>those around us<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
