\u00a0<\/span>Keshae<\/span>\u00a0Carruthers wanted to create\u00a0<\/span>something\u00a0<\/span>for herself<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and get out of her hometown at the same time<\/span>. S<\/span>eeing the U.S. Army as the perfect answer, she<\/span>\u00a0signed up at the age of nineteen.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cI needed a change, and to find a path for myself<\/span>,\u201d she explains. \u201c<\/span>Somewhere safe where I didn\u2019t have to worry about where to lay my head. The army gave me exactly that. The lessons in discipline, being prepared for anything that comes your way, being part of a team, trust, and leadership are things I will always carry with me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Keshae<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was deployed twice during her eight years of service, and\u00a0<\/span>spent four months in Afghanistan and 13 months in Kuwait.\u00a0<\/span>The experience<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of being deployed in Afghanistan and Kuwait w<\/span>ere<\/span>\u00a0in many ways similar<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>You\u2019re far away from home, surrounded by sand, dirt, and buildings that all look the same. It\u2019s hard. It\u2019s a culture shock. And the winter in Afghanistan is extremely cold.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The one big difference<\/span>\u00a0between the two\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>Keshae<\/span>\u00a0was the opportunity to volunteer<\/span>\u00a0in the community in Kuwait<\/span>. Always passionate about community service, she spent much of her free time volunteer<\/span>ing at a hospital for children.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I grew up in a family that taught me to love others as I love myself, and to never judge a soul<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Keshae<\/span>\u00a0says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>My dedication to helping others started long before pursuing a career in the army<\/span>, and m<\/span>y passion for<\/span>\u00a0community service is what ultimately led me to psychology,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cS<\/span>pending time in shelters<\/span>, hospitals,<\/span>\u00a0and soup kitchens, I realized that what a lot of people really need is someone to talk to,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to feel heard, to feel like someone cares about them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Born\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>a gift for talking to people<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and knowing when to take the time to listen to those who are feeling lost or hopeless<\/span>, after<\/span>\u00a0leaving the army<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Keshae<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>created another path for herself.<\/span>\u00a0She completed a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology earlier this year, and began her first semester of the M.A. Marriage and Family Therapy program at The Chicago School\u2019s Los Angeles campus this fall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>With this degree<\/span>, I<\/span>\u00a0hope to gain knowledge, skills, and training to open\u00a0<\/span>my\u00a0<\/span>own shelter for homeless men<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0My dream<\/span> is a program that allows the men to live and work in the facility, attend educational classes and skills training, and be offered individual and group therapy<\/span>. {It will be}\u00a0<\/span>a program that is designed to help rehabilitate<\/span>\u00a0people<\/span>\u00a0both mentally and physically, and help them get back\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>to society in a functional way.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
