Guiding children through this and helping their daily lives to feel normal can seem almost impossible. The Chicago School&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/chicago\/programs\/?fwp_field_of_study=school-psychology&amp;fwp_locations=chicago-program-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School Psychology<\/a> professor Dr. James Walsh provides a few tips to support children through this uncommon time.<\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Q:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">How do we create normalcy for children during this time?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/faculty-finder\/byname\/james_walsh\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Walsh<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">: These times are not going to be normal for most kids. clean, tidy place for them to work.\u00a0 If possible, try to find a place for them that is quiet and free of distractions (I know this is often impossible with multiple kids and parents sometimes data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Walsh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In many cases, teachers are sending parents links to different websites that can provide enrichment for what the kids are learning.\u00a0 These can be helpful to do with kids on weekends or evenings.\u00a0 A parent can also email the teacher and ask, &#8220;what do you think would be helpful for my child and I to work on together?&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research also supports the idea that doing things to help others makes us feel better.\u00a0 Calling a friend who is lonely, dropping off food at a food pantry, or dropping off extra toilet paper for a neighbor can make us feel better ourselves!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kids really do miss their friends!\u00a0 Many keep up with friends on social media, but I also recommend writing cards&#8211; kids love making them and receiving them!\u00a0 If you know it is someone&#8217;s birthday, for example, you could make a poster and walk or drive past their home and honk your horn and yell &#8220;Happy Birthday&#8221; to them as this community did in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/content\/news\/Local-neighborhood-surprises-kid-with-birthday-wishes---from-a-distance-569008521.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">College<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Station<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Take Away Point:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">During this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">time,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it is a great time to tell the kids that they are loved no matter what happens with the pandemic.\u00a0 You can let them know that sometimes people are scared or sad during difficult times, but many people are working very
