\"\"It\u2019s a free country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As children, we learn it in grammar school. As adults, we are accustomed to going where we want and doing what we choose, as long as\u00a0<\/span>we don\u2019t venture outside<\/span>\u00a0the limits of the law.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It is this long-held notion of individual liberty\u2014indelibly\u00a0<\/span>imprinted<\/span>\u00a0into the collective American psyche\u2014that makes today\u2019s admonition to \u201cstay at home\u201d difficult for so many.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span>e\u2019re\u00a0<\/span>living in a new world<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>adjusting to norms we couldn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>even have imagined just\u00a0<\/span>a few months ago.\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0global pandemic<\/span>\u00a0that we are facing is<\/span>\u00a0unlike anything any of us has experienced in our lifetimes<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u00a0that has\u00a0<\/span>changed our everyday existence and challenged our sense of what is\u00a0<\/span>okay<\/span>\u00a0and what is not.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>To date,\u00a0<\/span>hundreds\u00a0<\/span>of thousands have become ill<\/span>, a<\/span>nd\u00a0<\/span>thousands<\/span><\/i>\u00a0are dying.\u00a0<\/span>And we\u2019re told this is just the beginning. Suddenly, we have a completely new set of rules to follow, directives<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>until very recently would have flown direc<\/span>tly in the face of our\u00a0<\/span>promise of<\/span>\u00a0\u201clife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Why is it<\/span>, though,<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>some\u00a0<\/span>of us think the<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0rules are\u00a0<\/span>only\u00a0<\/span>for other people<\/span>? How come some people can convince themselves\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>hat \u201cit\u2019s not <\/span>going to affect me?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0a common psychological defense<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Our media has bombarded us with evidence about how contagious COVID-19 is, and how particularly vulnerable the older population\u2014and individuals with\u00a0<\/span>underlying conditions\u2014<\/span>are<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Yet, we\u2019re still having conversations about how willing we are\u00a0<\/span>to risk infecting others<\/span>\u00a0that may be less likely to recover<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Are people over 65 or those struggling with asthma, lung or heart disease expendable<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0After all, they were going to die anyway, sooner or later. This<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>actually\u00a0<\/span>some of the narrative out there right now.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I suggest that this is actually a time\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>true\u00a0<\/span>social responsibility, even when it comes at the expense of our everyday freedoms. We keep hearing that \u201cwe\u2019re all in this together,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s actually one of the few times in our lifetime that we\u00a0<\/span>\"\"get to see what being \u201cin it together\u201d actually means, <\/span>so let\u2019s act like it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I actually <\/span>understand why these changes\u00a0<\/span>we are being asked to make\u00a0<\/span>are so difficult.\u00a0<\/span>Us\u00a0<\/span>humans<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>crave structure and predictability, and\u00a0<\/span>without them<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019re at loose ends.\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>imes of crisis<\/span>\u00a0call for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>structured, predictable, st<\/span>rong, consistent leadership and clear,\u00a0<\/span>credible<\/span>\u00a0communications from th<\/span>e experts and leaders.\u00a0<\/span>When we receive conflicting or confusing messages<\/span>\u00a0in times of great crisis and uncertainty, it makes it hard for us to change our behavior and change it quickly. Right now, we all need something to hold on to so that we can change our behavior and sustain those changes. Structure and predictability bring\u00a0<\/span>a sense of safety, comfort, <\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>confidence in the future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Without it, individuals are\u00a0<\/span>left to make decisions that seem right to\u00a0<\/span>them,\u00a0<\/span>rather than ones th<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0safeguard the greater good.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All evidence points to the fact that we\u2019re in this for the long haul. Sequestering ourselves at home is going to become more and more difficult,<\/span>\"\" especially as winter melts into spring, bringing with it temptations of picnics in the park, beach outings, and backyard barbecues. We need to keep our eye on the ball so that we can, in epidemiological parlance, flatten the curve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When in question, let\u2019s err on the side of social responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are all in this together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
