(LOS ANGELES) (OCTOBER 24, 2017) \u2013 <\/strong>\u201cI will focus on one topic, and that is the importance of nurturing and expressing a sense of gratitude or appreciation in your relationships and in life more generally. I will then give you the opportunity to do exactly that towards those who have helped make this day possible,\u201d were the beginning remarks of Stanley Messer, Ph.D.\u2019s address to the 2017 Southern California and Online Campus graduating class. The Chicago School is one of the leading nonprofit graduate universities devoted exclusively to the study of psychology, and related behavioral health sciences with new programs in the health services.<\/p>\n

Dr. Messer was presented with the honorary degree of Doctor of Professional Practice, honoris causa at the October ceremony. A licensed and practicing psychologist, Dr. Messer received a bachelor of science in psychology with honors from McGill University and a masters and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Harvard University. He completed a two-year fellowship in psychotherapy at Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York, and has been a faculty member at Rutgers University since 1968.<\/p>\n

Representing the graduating class was Heather Laird, a Psy.D. in Marital and Family Therapy Program<\/a> graduate. \u201cMay you never forget that at the end of the day, although we came to The Chicago School to earn our degree that will serve us, we leave with the ability to serve others,\u201d said Dr. Laird to the 184 masters and doctoral degree recipients and over 1,000 of their family members and friends sitting eagerly inside the Long Beach Terrace Theatre.<\/p>\n

Shahrzad Jalali, Psy.D., a 2014 Applied Clinical Psychology<\/a> graduate was recognized with the 2017 Distinguished Alumna Award who also shared a few words of\u00a0wisdom: \u201cNavigate your patients to find the meaning in their narrative and the value in their journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also recognized, was Dr. Michael Sherman of the Forensic Psychology Department, as the 2016 winner of the Adjunct Teaching Award and Dr. Aaron Mishara of the Clinical Psychology Department as the winner of the Distinguished Research and Scholarship Award.<\/p>\n

Dr. Nealon concluded the ceremony with some encouraging words to the graduates, \u201creach into the issues that challenge your clients and your community. Embrace diversity and practice inclusion in all parts of your work and everyday living. A career that is not dedicated to making life better for all with whom you come in contact, will represent a missed opportunity to truly make an impact on society.\u201d<\/p>\n
