\u201cWhen someone asks me what makes a great leader, it\u2019s someone who never forgets the true reason why we\u2019re here,\u201d Martyn says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s to help our students. I look forward to working on activities with our students and seeing what they want, how they see The Chicago School meeting their needs. On top of that, I have a lot of respect for President Michele Nealon.\u201d<\/p>\n

That feeling of respect from the TCSPP president is mutual.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome Dr. Martyn, who brings a wealth of academic leadership experience to our founding campus in Chicago,\u201d Nealon says. \u201cNot only has she done great work for institutions such as Harold Washington College and DePaul University, but she is also a former TCSPP colleague. She wholeheartedly embraces our vision to become the preeminent institution for professional psychology.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the moment she started, Martyn already made teaching plans for the future at TCSPP confirming that she never \u201cwants to get too far away from the core vision of what I started out doing: teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n

TCSPP\u2019s reputation for openly embracing the world of technology and leveraging technology<\/a> to increase student learning intrigued Martyn about the opportunity at TCSPP. She earned her Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Akron with a minor in Computer Science, and an M.B.A. from Baldwin-Wallace College. Martyn started the first online program at Baldwin-Wallace University, where she was a faculty member in Computer Science and Business. At DePaul University, she was the Assistant Dean of Academic Administration at the College of Computing and Digital Media.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology can be used to customize student learning, and I think it can be very effective for a lot of people in this busy world,\u201d Dr. Martyn says. \u201cThe ways in which communication has evolved and improved in and out of the classroom helps students balance their busy lives as full-time employees, parents, and caretakers. With the ongoing advancements in technology, students and faculty have continued to grow their interaction and relationships. Even in on-campus classes, technology can be used to continue the learning even when students leave the buildings. In online classes, technology is vital for a real-time learning experience similar to that of a physical classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Martyn was providing vital strategy and leadership in complex work environments long before she entered higher education\u2014she became the first female dock foreman at a Cleveland, Ohio trucking company, working on streamlining logistics and minimizing damages . While she stayed there for nine years, ultimately it was her children who motivated her to move into the higher education space.<\/p>\n

\u201cI initially wanted to provide my children with the opportunity to get a quality college education,\u201d she says. \u201cHowever, seeing people of all ages and backgrounds able to find jobs and pursue careers that they loved because of the education my university was providing made me become more passionate about staying in the education field long term.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love most about higher education is how educators and institutions are so driven to help students succeed. Our role has really expanded to ensure that students are successful even after they\u2019ve moved on to their careers. I look forward to engaging our TCSPP alumni, learning about their successes, and gaining their feedback on making our programs even better.<\/p>\n

As part of our strategic plan at TCSPP, our goal is to develop programs that will help students integrate health\u2014emotional and physical\u2014into society through their careers. That kind of holistic approach to wellness will be really key for the U.S. to progress in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
