(CHICAGO) (March 21, 2018) <\/strong>\u2013<\/strong> Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced the 268 students who will make up the organization\u2019s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows, including The Chicago School\u2019s own Mariana Lopez<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Newman Civic Fellowship<\/a> is a yearlong program that recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Lopez, a second year student in the M.A. Counseling Psychology Program, Latino Mental Health Concentration<\/a>, uses her clinical skills and her experience as a certified yoga instructor and Advanced Living Light Reiki practitioner to bring awareness, reduce stress and increase an overall sense of well-being for low socioeconomic status LatinX elderly populations.<\/p>\n

\u201cElders and senior citizens are being forgotten,\u201d Lopez explained. \u201cI wish to promote healing and social justice through teaching and employing powerful yet gentle practices such as Reiki, yoga,and meditation practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, emphasizes personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate and engage with such an extraordinary group of students,\u201d said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn. \u201cThe stories of this year’s Newman Civic Fellows make clear that they are bringing people together in their communities to solve pressing problems. That is what Campus Compact is about, and it’s what our country and our world desperately need.\u201d<\/p>\n
