{"id":23036,"date":"2018-04-09T10:01:41","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T15:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/?post_type=insight_posts&#038;p=23036"},"modified":"2019-06-20T16:02:53","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T21:02:53","slug":"identity-in-context-south-africa-tcspp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/global\/identity-in-context-south-africa-tcspp\/","title":{"rendered":"TCSPP explores \u2018Identity in Context\u2019 study abroad course and trek to South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"clearfix\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP) is offering the opportunity for faculty and students to travel to Cape Town and Johannesburg for 10 days as part of a three-month online course called \u201cIdentity in Context: Examination of South Africa.\u201d The Fall 2018 interdisciplinary course will offer participants the opportunity to learn more about psychological, social, educational, legal, and healthcare perspectives from other working professionals and students with the help of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcsedsystem.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TCS Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23175\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cynthia-Langtiw-head-shot-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cynthia-Langtiw-head-shot-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cynthia-Langtiw-head-shot-1-300x254.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cynthia-Langtiw-head-shot-1-293x248.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Cynthia Langtiw<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI recommend every single one of our students take a trip abroad, specifically a course abroad,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/faculty-finder\/byname\/Cynthia_Langtiw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Cynthia Langtiw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an associate professor in TCSPP\u2019s clinical psychology department. \u201cThere\u2019s so much that we can learn in this program, and studying abroad gives us the chance to learn on a community level. As a clinical\/community psychologist, that\u2019s really important to me. Even in an American context with an American lens, it\u2019s important to broaden one\u2019s lens. Expansion of perspectives and the deepening of learning is why international courses are so important.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this will be Dr. Langtiw\u2019s first study abroad course, it won\u2019t be her last. The Haitian American professor has her eyes set on expanding community mental health across the globe in the Caribbean and the African diaspora. After recently earning a small grant from<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.thechicagoschool.edu\/community\/academicresource\/NCTL\/Pages\/Training-Catalogue.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty Development and Promotion Committees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at The Chicago School, as well as an internationalization grant from TCS Education System, first on her checklist is to create a course in Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She visited the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast in 2017 and plans to complete her overseas course by the summer or fall of 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I was there in December 2017, I provided workshops on trauma-informed care and qualitative psychology,\u201d says Dr. Langtiw. \u201cI plan to develop trainings on trauma-informed care, as well as global and professional identity components. And with respect to the course that we\u2019ll be teaching in South Africa, the online portion of the course is almost entirely about learning who each individual in the course is with respect to themselves and their personal and professional identity. South Africa is unique in that there\u2019s been so many rapid changes over the last 20 years post-apartheid.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Langtiw is also looking forward to seeing how students from different professions can collaborate with each other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIdeally once the course is complete, our law school students at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegesoflaw.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Colleges of Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have a different view of the law,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd our psychology students will have a different view of psychology. The same goes for education students at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificoaks.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Oaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and nursing students at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Nursing Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The beauty of this course is that we will all be learning from each other.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The online course, which is scheduled to run from October 5, 2018 to December 16, 2018, has a sign-up deadline of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/international.tcsedsystem.edu\/study-abroad\/education-beyond-borders\/south-africa\/faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August 1, 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Topics in the course will include acculturation and impact on families; cultural competency; advocacy; legal aspects; and mental health. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty leads representing each school include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saybrook.edu\/unbound\/identity-in-context-south-africa-saybrook-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Theopia Jackson<\/a>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saybrook.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saybrook University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s department chair for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saybrook.edu\/areas-of-study\/humanistic-clinical-psychology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical Psychology program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificoaks.edu\/voices\/identity-in-context-south-africa-pacific-oaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Marcia Bankirer<\/a>, the dean of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificoaks.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Oaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 San Jose, California campus; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.edu\/blog\/identity-in-context-south-africa-dallas-nursing-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Iris Hobson<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ADN instructor for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Nursing Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegesoflaw.edu\/blog\/2018\/04\/01\/identity-in-context-south-africa-colleges-of-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Dominguez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, J.D., an adjunct faculty member for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegesoflaw.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Colleges of Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegesoflaw.edu\/master-of-legal-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master of Legal Studies program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and Dr. Langtiw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, a Saybrook alumna and TCSPP faculty and students also participated in a 10-day trip to South Africa during the <\/span><a href=\"\/insight\/ept-south-africa-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online Ed.D. in Educational Psychology and Technology course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will be the second cross-study course for TCS Education System colleges.
