After being elected as the 65th<\/sup> president of the American Counseling Association<\/a> (ACA) Dr. Catherine Roland, professor and chair of the Counselor Education Program<\/a> at the Washington, D.C. Campus<\/a> of The Chicago School<\/a>, began her role as president-elect on July 1, 2015. Dr. Roland has accepted a three-year commitment to the world\u2019s largest organization that exclusively represents counselors in all practice settings. She will begin her year as president on July 1, 2016, and her year as past president on July 1, 2017. \u201cMy job as president-elect is to support the current president, and to take a role in helping the national divisions of ACA and regional associations, and ACA as a whole accomplish goals. I will also advocate on behalf of counselors, as well as the counseling profession,\u201d said Dr. Roland. \u201cI\u2019m excited. The ACA is unlike any other organization, and there is a lot of work to be done. I hope to continue to make educated decisions and plan to be open and empathic, involving as many new and emerging leaders in the profession along the way as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nonprofit ACA represents counselors in the U. S. and in 50 other countries, including in Europe and Latin America. Made up of a network of 19 divisions, four regional associations and 56 branches, the association counts more than 56,000 counselors as members. Tenets of the ACA\u2019s mission include enhancing the quality of life in society by promoting the development of professional counselors, advancing the counseling profession and using the profession and practice of counseling to promote respect for social justice, human dignity and diversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing elected president is the top honor in my field and I\u2019m humbled by it,\u201d said Dr. Roland. \u201cWhen I think of the thousands of members of ACA and that I will have any role at all in assisting and shaping the vision of the profession, I am in awe. I hope I can fulfill the expectations that are set for me, and I will certainly do the best that I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having participated as an active member in a relationship with the ACA that spans close to 30 years, Dr. Roland has held previous leadership positions in the organization. She has served as president of the Association for Adult Development and Aging Division, as editor for that division\u2019s peer-reviewed journal, \u201cADULTSPAN,\u201d and has served three terms as a representative for the ACA Governing Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no doubt that Dr. Roland\u2018s leadership will serve the American Counseling Association well,\u201d said Heather Sheets, Psy.D., campus dean, The Chicago School, Washington D.C. Campus. \u201cShe is an experienced, highly respected counselor educator whose passion for her field comes across in everything she does. She is a tremendous asset as a mentor and educator to her students and will bring that passion to her role in the ACA as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
