{"id":4403,"date":"2015-02-19T21:07:31","date_gmt":"2015-02-19T21:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/?p=4403"},"modified":"2024-09-20T11:46:47","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T16:46:47","slug":"the-chicago-school-of-professional-psychology-brings-experts-together-to-discuss-new-insights-from-neuroscience-for-mental-health-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/news\/the-chicago-school-of-professional-psychology-brings-experts-together-to-discuss-new-insights-from-neuroscience-for-mental-health-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chicago School brings experts together to discuss new insights from Neuroscience for Mental Health Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"clearfix\"><p>To place much-needed focus on the necessity of including mental health care as a core part of any discussion on the future of healthcare in the U.S., The Chicago School will be hosting a \u00a0\u201c<em>No Health Without Mental Health<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em> <em>\u00a0<\/em>symposium on Wednesday, March 18<sup>th<\/sup> from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST. at the <a href=\"http:\/\/centerfortotalhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<em>No Health Without Mental Health\u201d<\/em> symposium will offer attendees a high-impact discussion on the way we think about ongoing healthcare reform, placing particular emphasis on neuroscience and exploring new insights from studies of the brain that provide solutions to some of the most complex problems facing our healthcare delivery system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can no longer think of mental health as separate from physical health,\u201d said Michele Nealon, Psy.D., president of The Chicago School.\u00a0 \u201cOne in five Americans receives prescriptions for psychiatric drugs, and 6 percent of children are being treated with medication for mental health issues. Neuroscience shows us that the profound interplay between physical and mental health must be understood by policy makers and the general public if we are to have a highly functioning health care system that works for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We can no longer think of mental health as separate from physical health,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Top tier experts at the symposium will discuss emerging neuroscience and its implications for policy and healthcare practice.<\/p>\n<p>Presenters and panelists include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keynote speaker, Stephen W. Porges, Ph.D., professor\u00a0 of psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/li>\n<li>Mohammad Akhter, M.D., M.P. H., former chairman, D.C. Health Benefits Exchange Authority; former director, D.C. Department of Health<\/li>\n<li>Georges Benjamin, M.D., executive director, American Public Health Association<\/li>\n<li>Sue Carter, Ph.D., director, The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, Bloomington<\/li>\n<li>Michele Nealon, Psy.D., president, The Chicago School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <em>No Health Without Mental Health<\/em> symposium is a complimentary event and is co-sponsored by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhamc.org\/html\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health Association of Montgomery County<\/a>. An ongoing part of The Chicago School\u2019s 35<sup>th<\/sup>Anniversary celebration, the symposium is the second in a series of events designed to create a national conversation to reframe views on mental health. The first event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/35th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Let\u2019s Talk Solutions<\/em><\/a>, took place in November 2014. Also in 2014, The Chicago School established the institution\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/online\/programs\/master-of-public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of Public Health Program<\/a>, linking mental health to overall health and well-being through a new Health Sciences Division. The results of the <em>No Health Without Mental Health<\/em> symposium and the <em>Let\u2019s Talk Solutions<\/em> event will be compiled to be released in a fall 2015 report, also entitled <em>No Health Without Mental Health<\/em>.\u00a0 The purpose of the report is to outline the mental wellness issues facing our society today and to suggest some strategies for dealing with them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About The Chicago School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1979, The Chicago School is a nonprofit, private university devoted exclusively to psychology, and related behavioral and health sciences.
