{"id":6421,"date":"2016-05-31T17:53:33","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T22:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/?p=6421"},"modified":"2025-12-04T15:07:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T21:07:35","slug":"annual-community-mental-health-conference-open-to-public-and-mental-health-professionals-announces-discussion-group-and-speaker-lineup-for-june-5-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/news\/annual-community-mental-health-conference-open-to-public-and-mental-health-professionals-announces-discussion-group-and-speaker-lineup-for-june-5-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual community mental health conference announces discussion group, speaker lineup for June conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"clearfix\"><p><strong>(CHICAGO) (May 23, 2016) <\/strong>Members of the public and mental health professionals wanting to learn more about mental health issues will have an opportunity to attend a conference covering such <a href=\"http:\/\/naomicoheninstitute.org\/2016-mental-health-why-does-it-matter-a-compassionate-community-responds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pressing issues<\/a> as reducing stigma, LGBTQ mental health, identifying mental health issues in adolescents, and addiction and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/naomicoheninstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute for Mental Health Education at The Chicago School<\/a>\u2019s 15<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Community Mental Health Conference will also feature such dynamic speakers as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookcountysheriff.com\/sheriffs_bio\/sheriff_bio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart<\/a>, who will speak about how the mentally ill are treated in the justice system and what needs to be done to affect change.<\/li>\n<li>Temple University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cph.temple.edu\/rs\/faculty\/mark-salzer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Mark Salzer<\/a>, director of the Collaborative on Community Inclusion of Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities, who will speak about inclusion of mentally ill individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Jesse Teverbaugh, director of Student and Alumni Affairs at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecaraprogram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Cara Program<\/a>, who will speak about breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Titled \u201cMental Health: Why does it Matter? A Compassionate Community Responds\u201d the conference opens on June 5 at <a href=\"http:\/\/bethemet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beth Emet The Free Synagogue<\/a> at 1224 W. Dempster, Evanston, IL, and will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow our community responds to compelling mental health needs in these challenging economic and social times is a critical issue. The 2016 Community Mental Health Conference will address this question,\u201d said Lawrence Cohen, NRCI founder. \u201cThis conference is designed not only to inform and teach, but also to enable us all to learn more about the most vulnerable in our society, and how each of us can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mentally ill have been systematically neglected and demonized and ultimately criminalized in this country. Let us finally prioritize mental health and see justice for the mentally ill out of respect for their humanity, not of our fear,\u201d said Sheriff Dart.<\/p>\n<p>The conference is underwritten by the Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute for Mental Health Education at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Chicago School<\/a>, the nation\u2019s leading nonprofit graduate university devoted exclusively to the study of psychology and related behavioral health sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NRCI conference is essential to continue the dialogue about reducing stigma related to mental illness and annually shines a light on the issue of mental health for many in the Chicagoland area,\u201d said Tiffany Masson, Psy.D., interim campus dean, Chicago Campus, The Chicago School and moderator of this year\u2019s conference. \u201cThe Chicago School community looks forward to the conference every year because we know that every workshop and speaker will broaden our view of mental health and how all of us as a community can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/mental-health-why-does-it-matter-a-compassionate-community-responds-tickets-23024964288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Registration<\/a> to the conference is open.
