{"id":94181,"date":"2019-02-14T14:26:23","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T20:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/?p=94181"},"modified":"2025-10-02T14:48:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T19:48:04","slug":"its-time-to-talk-out-loud-about-mental-health-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/insight\/news\/its-time-to-talk-out-loud-about-mental-health-2\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Time to Talk Out Loud About Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"clearfix\"><blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">People have been taught their whole life to \u2018suck it up,\u2019 to \u2018stop crying.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jay Styles (<em>pictured below with son Jack and daughter Elle<\/em>) believes \u201cthe ability to talk out loud about mental health &#8211; how others are leading the charge to change the stigma and help others struggling,\u201d is the biggest benefit to having an event like The Chicago School\u2019s Social Impact Awards Luncheon.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/wshechicago.com\/\">WSHE<\/a> radio host is the emcee of the March 7<sup>th<\/sup> event that will honor Chicago mental health advocates Dan Bigg, Dr. Armand Cerbone and Captain Jeffrey A. Coady, and he\u2019s very well<\/p>\n<p>acquainted with the stigma that so often surrounds mental illness. Styles has lived with depression since he was 13, but was not diagnosed until the age of 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStigma is the biggest {issue}. People have been taught their whole life to \u2018suck it up,\u2019 to \u2018stop crying.\u2019 The image of someone with a mental health issue has been portrayed\u00a0in society and film as someone who is crazy. I basically bought into the saying\u00a0\u2018get busy living or get busy dying\u2019 \u2013 literally. After a failed attempt on my life, I put myself in a center {and} started to turn the corner onto the road I am on now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being a suicide survivor and living with depression, Styles has borderline personality disorder and battles anxiety. He speaks very publicly about these issues, and is proud to \u201cwear these tags \u2013 the scars of battles fought and won.\u201d Using his social media platforms, he pleads with those who may be \u201cstruggling with your day-to-day, have uneasy thoughts, or can\u2019t see past the dark,\u201d to tell someone, to seek help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for me to continue to share my story &#8212; my enthusiasm about overcoming mental health {issues} and living a beautiful life. I want to help others speak up, and no longer live in the darkness.
