Graduates of the Master\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechicagoschool.edu\/psychology-programs\/clinical-mental-health-counseling\/\">Clinical Mental Health Counseling<\/a> (CMHC) program will be prepared to provide counseling services to individuals, families, couples, and groups, and will be able to help clients work through a wide variety of issues, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Grief<\/li>\n<li>Low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<li>Relationship difficulties<\/li>\n<li>Suicidal impulses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/community-and-social-service\/substance-abuse-behavioral-disorder-and-mental-health-counselors.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, the employment of mental health counselors is expected to grow 19% from 2023 through 2033. While private practice is often the first career path people think of in relation to clinical mental health counseling, there are other careers you can pursue. Read on for more information about nine specific types of mental health counselor careers graduates can pursue with a master\u2019s degree in clinical mental health counseling.<\/p>\n<a class='requestbut' href='#single-ninja-form'>Request info<\/a>\n<h2>Social Worker<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/community-and-social-service\/social-workers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social workers<\/a> can work in a variety of settings, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hospitals<\/li>\n<li>Nonprofit organizations<\/li>\n<li>Mental health clinics<\/li>\n<li>Schools<\/li>\n<li>Child welfare and human service agencies<\/li>\n<li>Settlement houses<\/li>\n<li>Community development corporations<\/li>\n<li>Private practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Depending on social workers&#8217; work environment, it can change the scope of job responsibilities and requirements. It is important to note that social workers help people to access counseling\u2014meaning, they\u2019ll refer them to someone who can provide those types of services. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestcounselingdegrees.net\/faq\/what-are-the-differences-between-a-clinical-social-worker-and-a-counselor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clinical social workers<\/a> provide counseling in addition to that (and are typically licensed).<\/p>\n<p>In hospitals, social workers can provide education, assist with support groups, advocate for patients and their families, help them find resources, and (if licensed) offer mental health services. Given the often-stressful nature of hospitals, social workers are a good resource for patients and their families if they are dealing with loss, a diagnosis, or other health-related problems.<\/p>\n<p>Social workers can also be found in nonprofits. Specifically, social workers are helpful in settlement houses or homeless shelters. <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/homelessness-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">45% of the homeless population<\/a> shows a history of mental illness diagnoses. Organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northsidehousing.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Side Housing and Supportive Services<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franoutreach.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Franciscan Outreach<\/a> have social workers who provide counseling to give clients lasting support.<\/p>\n<h3>What is the average salary for social workers?<\/h3>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/community-and-social-service\/social-workers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, the median salary for social workers is $61,330.<\/p>\n<h2>Geriatric Counselor<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amhca.org\/members\/career\/credential\/apply\/geriatric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geriatric counselors<\/a> work specifically with elderly individuals, whether that\u2019s helping them with the retirement transition or with end-of life-matters. These counselors can also help clients process the loss of a spouse, lifelong friends, independence, or deteriorating health. They can work in settings such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mental health centers<\/li>\n<li>Community health centers<\/li>\n<li>Prisons<\/li>\n<li>Private practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given that relapse can happen for <a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/rehab-guide\/addiction-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">40 to 60%<\/a> of those with substance use disorders, many substance abuse counselors treat clients on an on-going basis.<\/p>\n<h2>Employee Assistance Program Counselor<\/h2>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/agencies\/asa\/foh\/bhs\/employee-assistant-program\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employee assistance program<\/a> (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers assistance to employees facing mental and emotional issues, or work-related and\/or personal problems. EAP counselors can either work remotely or on-site in the workplace. Since many EAPs offer <a href=\"https:\/\/work.chron.com\/requirements-employment-assistance-program-counselor-22312.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24\/7 support<\/a>, counselors may be required to work evenings and weekends.<\/p>\n<p>More than <a href=\"https:\/\/money.howstuffworks.com\/why-hardly-anyone-uses-employee-assistance-programs.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">97%<\/a> of companies with more than 5,000 employees have EAPs and 75 to 80% of mid-sized and smaller companies have them as well. The rationale behind workplaces having EAPs is that if employers take care of the mental health needs of employees, productivity will increase and business costs will decrease. EAPs give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancecareers.com\/do-eaps-work-or-just-make-employers-feel-good-1917971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">managers and human resources staff<\/a> an opportunity to refer help to an employee in need.<\/p>\n<h2>Sports Counselor<\/h2>\n<p>Sports counseling is a specialized field of work where counselors are concerned with the well-being, mental functioning, and physical performance of athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Athletic departments in colleges and universities, as well as professional sports teams or leagues, employ sports counselors. Attending mental health counseling can teach athletes techniques for overcoming the stress and pressure they experience during a competition, which in turn can improve their performance. Matthew Cunliffe, a sport psychologist says it best: \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/753857\/for-olympians-to-reach-the-highest-level-they-need-a-sports-psychologist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top six inches of the body matter just as much as the rest<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Military Personnel Counselors<\/h2>\n<p>Military personnel counselors can work in the military either as civilians or official members. As a counselor in this position, you would work with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>War heroes and veterans<\/li>\n<li>Deployment anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Soldiers with substance abuse problems<\/li>\n<li>Soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder<\/li>\n<li>Individuals with depression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Military personnel counselors take care of service members who face challenges in the battlefront and away from the war.
