Program Overview
The M.A. Counseling Psychology program at The Chicago School is designed to meet the educational requirements to pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in many states. As one of the few master’s-level counseling psychology degrees in the Chicago area, this program offers a distinctive path for students in the Midwest seeking counseling training grounded in psychological science.
The generalist track offers ultimate flexibility, allowing you to choose from nearly 25 electives to shape your studies around your academic interests. You may also pick one of six concentrations to focus your studies on a specific professional goal:
- Latinx Mental Health: Study how socio-historical factors shape Latinx mental health and prepare to support Latinx clients and families.
- Child and Adolescent Therapy: Build skills for working with children and adolescents across developmental stages.
- Treatment of Addiction Disorders: Learn to assess, prevent, and treat substance use and behavioral addictions in community-based settings. At the Chicago Campus, this concentration may also help you meet requirements for certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) in Illinois.
- Health Psychology: Explore counseling approaches that help clients manage health-related challenges across the lifespan.
- Trauma and Crisis Intervention: Develop skills for supporting clients affected by acute and long-term trauma.
- Marriage and Family Therapy: Study family systems and prepare to support couples and families through relational challenges.
Our experienced faculty members, many of whom have served in the department for years, include licensed psychologists who bring deep clinical expertise to each of their lessons.
