Biography

Dr. Bernie de la Garza brings both administrative and teaching experience over the past 15 years in higher education. Dr. de la Garza received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Kansas State University in 2012 and began his teaching career in 2010 at The University of Texas - Brownsville. During his time at UT-Brownsville, Dr. de la Garza was the Coordinator of the Masters in Experimental Psychology and served as thesis chair for students. After his 5-year tenure at UT-Brownsville. Dr. de la Garza was appointed as the Coordinator of undergraduate Psychology at Our Lady of the Lake University for the Rio Grande Valley in Texas in 2015. As Coordinator, he developed the undergraduate program through recruitment, teaching, and practicum site development. Dr. de la Garza subsequently served as Coordinator of the Masters and Ph.D. in Leadership Studies for Our Lady of the Lake University and served as dissertation chair for students within the Ph.D. program from 2019 - 2024. In 2024, Dr. de la Garza returned to the Department of Psychology at Our Lady of the Lake University to serve as Associate Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Mental Health First Aid Grant.

Dr. de la Garza's research interests focus on psycholinguistic issues related to bilingual language development. Specifically, his interests are in third language acquisition, language learning strategies, and comprehension and memory storage in bilinguals. Additionally, Dr. de la Garza's recent publications have focused on methodological issues in psychological research including dealing with "good" and "bad" participants, crowdsourcing data, and benefits and limitations to using quantitative and qualitative data in psychological research.
