Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy.

I suspect that I take more of a team approach to teaching while also using the Socratic method in a subtle way. I believe everyone has a unique learning style. I like to meet students where their at academically with the hopes of providing a way in which they can excel academically.

Please provide a statement or philosophy regarding the practice of psychology.

I am a believer in the integration of Motivational Interviewing, Positive Psychology and Medical Psychology. I think that in order for the practice of psychology to work we must focus on the strengths and assets of our patients rather than the illness. I am inclined to suspect that the concept of self-care is not taught enough. I think it is also valuable for Psychologist's to be able to interact with physicians in ways they can understand and see our value.

Why did you choose to enter the field of psychology?

I worked in my parents general store starting at age 11. I noticed that many people would purchase things not because they needed them but because they wanted to have a conversation and interact with someone. I learned that people are often lonely and neglected and this stuck with me. When I went Radford University the first psychology course I took was called Languages of the Brain. The professor was none other than Karl Pribram. He basically captured my interest in neuroscience and was a great mentor. The rest is history.

What advice would you give to a student entering The Chicago School?

I know what it's like to be a student and to feel stretched in many directions. Above all you have to work hard, believe in yourself, and trust that you are capable and competent.
