Biography
Dr. Sexton is a Full Professor. He has been on faculty at the George Washington University, American School of Professional Psychology, and Wellesley College. He has both a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the American University and another Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. He has been a research consultant working on grants for NIMH, CDC, NIH, NIAAA, SAMHSA, Census, and the Departments of State and Education. He has over 100 presentations, a dozen publications, reviews for 5 journals and currently is chair of one of APA's research committees. He has many research interests including models of personality trait and functioning, how intersectionality influences the relationship between variables, long term effects of early life experiences (trauma and parenting), as well as the impact of emotional expression and regulation (especially anger). He is an active clinician who utilizes an integrative approach that relies on mindfulness, attachment (object relations), and Acceptance Commitment Therapy. The people he works clinically with tend to be international and coping with anxiety, depression, anger management, and trauma.
