Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy.

As an educator, I believe teaching is not just about imparting knowledge, but about inspiring and empowering students to think critically and challenge themselves in order to make a positive impact on the world. My goal as an instructor is to create a collaborative learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions, discuss difficult concepts, and engage in open dialogue with their peers. I strive to foster diversity and inclusion in my classroom, recognizing and respecting each student's unique perspective and background.

I believe in setting high expectations for my students, while also providing them with the support and encouragement they need to succeed. I aim to cultivate a professional relationship with my students, guiding them towards ethical and professional behavior both in and out of the classroom. Through patience, humor, and personal examples of my own learning journey, I hope to inspire students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers. I understand that higher education can be a transformative experience, challenging students' beliefs and pushing them to grow both academically and personally. Therefore, I work to create a learning community that is supportive, encouraging collaborative inquiry, and fostering a sense of belonging. By conveying respect, fairness, and high expectations, I aim to create an environment where students feel motivated to excel and are empowered to reach their full potential. I am committed to getting to know my students on a personal level, understanding their unique strengths and challenges, and supporting them on their academic journey. I am excited to be a part of their growth and development as they work towards building their professional identities and making a positive impact on the world.

Please provide a statement or philosophy regarding the practice of psychology.

My counseling philosophy is rooted in a strengths-based, culturally informed, and relational approach to therapy. I believe in the importance of promoting self-agency, decreasing stigma, and utilizing a non-pathologizing approach toward understanding protective human behaviors and the human condition. By integrating neuroscience, compassionate care, Western and non-Western approaches, and a holistic focus on the individual or group, the culture, and the environment, I strive to provide a safe and supportive space for clients to explore their values and goals for improvement.

I believe in the power of collaboration with other medical and helping professionals, utilizing integrative methods to promote overall well-being and healing components. Cultural humility is at the core of my practice, as I aim to respect and honor the diversity of each client's background and experiences. I recognize that each client is unique and may respond differently to various therapeutic approaches. Therefore, the client is invited to incorporate both traditional and experiential integrated counseling techniques, such as creative arts, yoga, somatic therapy, felt sense, cultural traditions, Reiki, and more. By fostering a strong therapeutic alliance and nurturing a client's sense of empowerment, I strive to walk alongside them toward meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.

Why did you choose to enter the field of psychology?

I am deeply passionate about the field of counseling and psychology because I believe in the power of human connection and the innate ability for individuals to heal and grow. Safety is an essential component for human growth and development, and like many, I have experienced things like loss, a lack of safety, trauma, and a lack of access to resources that can significantly change lives if we as professionals are willing to break the mold and decrease the stigma associated with mental health. At age 13, my early exposure to trauma and recovery literature ignited a fire within me to help make positive change in the lives of those who have experienced suffering or even uncertainty. At that time in my life, I committed to providing a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals from diverse backgrounds to access the resources and support they need to thrive. My ultimate goal has always been to help break the stigma associated with mental health and collaborate with people to facilitate worldwide healing. I am dedicated to utilizing evidence-based practices and compassionate care to create a better world and future for all.

I believe that higher education in Psychology and Counseling provides a platform for us to collaborate and cultivate a brighter future for all. By merging my desire to give back to my community with my commitment to promoting safety, I am dedicated to contributing to a world where everyone can thrive and have access to in-depth and collaborative care efforts. It takes all of us, and I believe in the power of humanity!

What advice would you give to a student entering The Chicago School?

As a professional in the helping field, your journey of growth must be ongoing and intentional. True development calls for curiosity, ask the hard questions, seek out mentorship, and lean into the discomfort of expanding your comfort zone. It is in this space of challenge that transformation begins.

Push beyond the limits of what you know. Embrace unfamiliar perspectives, deepen your awareness of thoughts and sensations, and weave your own wellness into the very fabric of your work. Growth is rarely comfortable. If you feel stretched, you are learning. Never forget: you hold the power to embody the change you wish to see in the world. That power begins with willingness and a readiness to explore, to connect, and to evolve. Seek out opportunities with us, collaborate with fellow professionals, and engage in the work not only as practitioners, but as clients too. Healing is a shared path. Your greatest growth will not come solely from textbooks or classrooms, but from your lived experiences and practice. Your presence becomes your power. You are not only part of the present, you have the power to help shape the future of this profession and our world.
