Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy.

I believe that teaching is a art that requires, collaboration, engagement, and trust. Teaching for me is a way of providing a service to the next generation of clinicians; and most importantly inspiring them and building their skills so that they can make a impactful difference in the community that they want to serve.

Please provide a statement or philosophy regarding the practice of psychology.

One of the things I learned about myself through the study of psychology is how complex things are. As an immigrant growing up undocumented in Dallas, I was quickly taught where I belong and where I didn't. I was also blessed with living between two cultures the 'American' culture and the 'Latino' culture.

As a student studying human behavior I began to better understand things that I had felt for a long time. It also gave me insight into my own behaviors and more importantly challenged my own personal biases that for a long time I just accepted without questioning them.

Why did you choose to enter the field of psychology?

I chose this field in undergraduate because I started to explore different themes within myself and I began to realize how important mental well-being is for a person. I also chose this field because I realized how few clinicians are in the field that look like myself or have the same background. Finally, I chose this field because I am in a position of privilege and I can be a voice to those that may not have one.

What advice would you give to a student entering The Chicago School?

Understand that to be healer one must begin by exploring self and healing themselves first. Understand that this is a journey that has no clear beginning or end but as Gilda Radner described, life is full of 'delicious ambiguity.' Build and nurture the relationships that you want to create as those relationships are what is going to guide you and provide personal meaning for a life worth living. Finally find individuals that inspire you and allow them to mentor you for the greater good of society.
