Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy.

My personal orientation for counseling, clinical supervision, and teaching is rooted in Feminist therapy. I recognize the power dynamics that exist between the counselor-client, the supervisor-supervisee, and the student-instructor. Therefore, I am constantly examining ways in which I can provide empowerment to clients, supervisees, and students, with the overarching recognition that 1) I carry white, hetero-passing, thin privilege, and 2) there are so many systemic inequities that exist in our society. I also believe that part of my role as a professor is to help students achieve success through feedback, instruction, and vicarious learning opportunities.

Why did you choose to enter the field of psychology?

Like many folks, I chose to pursue a degree in counseling because I had my own battle with mental health and previous traumatic experiences. My clinical practice has been evolving since I began in 2013 to this current point. My own personal experiences with autoimmune conditions, lack of access to care, matrescence, and motherhood have lead me to the clinical specialities I provide today. I believe there is a significant level of authenticity that comes with lived experience, and I believe that translates in my work with clients.
