Biography
Dr. Hewitt earned his Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the APA accredited California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles, with a proficiency focus on individual, family, and child therapy. He completed his undergraduate studies in Psychology with a minor in Human Services at California State University, Fullerton.
Dr. Hewitt brings over 25 years of clinical experience to his teaching and scholarship, including two decades of service with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). His professional journey includes clinical and leadership roles in correctional mental health, including serving as Chief of Mental Health at the California Institution for Women and, most recently, as Regional Mental Health Administrator overseeing mental health programs across eight state prisons in Southern California. In these roles, he has led system-level initiatives to enhance access to care, clinical quality, and compliance with federal court mandates.
His early career included work in community mental health and private practice, providing services to underserved populations, and supervising APA-accredited internship training. He is a Certified Therapist in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and a California licensed psychologist.
Dr. Hewitt began teaching in 2012 as an adjunct professor in Argosy University's Forensic Psychology Master's program and at the American School of Professional Psychology. He joined The Chicago School, Anaheim Campus in 2019 as adjunct faculty and transitioned to a full-time position in 2025. He teaches doctoral-level courses in psychopathology, substance use treatment, ethics, and clinical supervision, as well as courses within The Chicago School's Forensic Psychology Major Area of Study, including Criminal Psychology and Correctional Psychology. His teaching is grounded in extensive professional experience in assessment, crisis intervention, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration with diverse, high-need populations
