Biography
Dr. Scherer is an Associate Professor who has been with TCSPP since August of 2018. He has degrees in Rehabilitation Counseling (MS) from the Medical College of Virginia and Counseling Psychology (PhD) from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Drug Dependence and Epidemiology Training program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where his research focused primarily on substance use ranging from alcohol and cannabis to injection drug use. He also taught a series of short courses focusing on statistical methodology. His research sought to identify risk factors associated with substance misuse and polysubstance use as well as developing strength-based treatment supplements to promote self-efficacy and reduce relapse rates.
Currently, Dr. Scherer teaches courses in statistics, research methods, psychometrics, proposal development as well as a series of electives examining substance use and positive psychology. He continues to do research focusing on substance use and misuse, maladaptive behaviors, coping strategies, intervention effectiveness, and positive psychology. He has a primary interest in quantitative methodology and analysis. He also runs a research lab once a week focusing primarily on the impact of substance use and positive psychology on daily functioning. Dr. Scherer has numerous professional presentations at national and international conferences, and has published on his work many times.
