Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that higher education is a transformative journey that fosters critical awareness, ethical responsibility, and professional skills. In doctoral and graduate programs, learning should extend beyond acquiring knowledge to include identity development, intellectual challenge, and disciplined self-reflection. I see my role not merely as delivering content but as a guide for deep inquiry, integrative thinking, and professional growth. I firmly believe a learning environment should be inspiring, thought-provoking, inquisitive, and safe, and it should promote a community capacity-building mindset. I am open-minded, flexible, and approachable, yet I hold high expectations for my students because I trust in their potential. My passion for teaching motivates me to help my students develop a passion for learning. As a supporter of universal education, I aim to cultivate a strong desire to learn, grow, and be inspired through my teaching.

Please provide a statement or philosophy regarding the practice of psychology.

My approach to psychological practice integrates scientific knowledge, ethical considerations, cultural humility, and a profound understanding of relationships. I perceive psychology not merely as a compilation of techniques but as a conscientious, compassionate exploration of human experience. Effective practice necessitates intellectual rigor, self-awareness, and a profound respect for the complexity of individual and cultural identities.

Why did you choose to enter the field of psychology?

My entry into the discipline of psychology was somewhat incidental, as my primary interests in design, computation, complex problem-solving, and process optimization had already led to a successful career in manufacturing engineering. Nonetheless, a series of life events provided an opportunity to transition from system and process analysis to exploring the humanistic dimensions of complex problem-solving, adopting a scientific, methodical approach to challenges. Although initially driven by curiosity and later by a calling, psychology offered a framework for examining complexity at another level—cognitive, emotional, relational, and cultural—while requiring the same precision in analytical thinking I valued in engineering. Psychology applies this rigor to the intricacies of human experience.

What advice would you give to a student entering The Chicago School?

TCSPP has consistently provided exemplary education that prepares students for their professional careers and cultivates advocates committed to promoting integrated, accessible, and culturally competent healthcare globally. As you embark on your journey toward becoming global champions, I advise new students to strive to become scholars, exemplifying discipline, humility, curiosity, and resilience. Remember that your academic and professional transformation extends beyond earning credentials; it also involves embracing intellectual humility, honing time-management skills, forming mentoring relationships, learning to accept feedback, cultivating a scholarly identity early on, prioritizing well-being, and allowing confidence and clarity to develop gradually. You will not be alone on this journey. Your faculty, staff, and peers will be present to provide the necessary support, guidance, and encouragement throughout the process. Finally, it is essential to recognize your own strength, diligence, perseverance, and resilience that have guided you. While the prospect of reaching the summit is undoubtedly inspiring, it is equally crucial to reflect with admiration and reverence on the journey thus far. You possess the capability to succeed.
