Biography

Dr. Barrett is a Professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology Washington DC. He earned his Ph.D. at the California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego in 1986. Dr. Barrett also earned an MA in Liturgical Studies at the Catholic University of America. Dr. Barrett completed his pre-doctoral internship at the Counseling and Psychological Services Center at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Barrett also served as an Assistant Professor of psychology at St. Joseph's College in Mountain View, CA and Dean of Students at St. Mary's College in Baltimore MD. Dr. Barrett opened a private practice in San Diego in 1987 which primarily provided psychological services to various police departments, the LGBTQ community, and health related issues. In 1991 Dr. Barrett assumed the position of staff psychologist at the Livingston Foundation Medical Center in San Diego. He was later appointed clinical director and executive director. While in San Diego Dr. Barrett also served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Social Service which was an organization servicing the needs of the LGBTQ community. In this capacity he served as chair of the board for two years.

Upon returning to the Washington, DC area in 2001 Dr. Barrett opened a private practice which he has maintained for over 20 years. In 2004 Dr. Barrett was appointed chair of the clinical psychology program at the American School of Professional Psychology, Northern Virginia. He served in that capacity for 10 years. In 2013 Dr. Barrett was named the National Dean of the College of Clinical Psychology at Argosy University. In 2019 Dr. Barrett joined the faculty of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Washington DC as a professor of clinical psychology. In addition to his teaching and administrative responsibilities Dr. Barrett was elected as chair of the Committee on LGBTQ Issues of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology. He also served on the Executive Committee of NCSPP for five years. As a member of the Executive Committee he served as a liaison to the APA committee on LGBTQ issues and the Association of University Counseling Center Internship Supervisors
