Biography

Dr. Pope is a professor of Immunology and Microbiology, He earned his bachelor of arts from Miami University, Ohio with a major in Microbiology. His J.D. degree was earned from the University of Cincinnati. After 5 years of practicing law, he pursued and earned his Ph.D. from University of Cincinnati in the department of molecular genetics, microbiology, and immunology for a thesis project involving the function of Eotaxin-2 in the development of asthma associated lung eosinophilia.

Dr. Pope has several academic interest areas. Historically, his research has examined The TH2 pathway and the pathogenesis of asthma. I also explored the effect of Toxoplasma infection on the production and contents of extracellular vesicles by infected cells. However, his research has evolved in two directions since. One being aimed at reducing the impact of the release of biologic weapons; the other being an examination of the immunologic impact of artificial joint wear particles. He is also actively involved in disaster response. He sits on the board of directors foe the Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health. And has been a member of the medical reserve corps since 2007. He also an active member on the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology's Vaccines Committee, and the Cells and Mediators of Inflammation Committee.

Outside of IllinoisCOM, Dr. Pope enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and kayaking with his family. He is a fan of Australian Rules Football.
