Lipp is a board-certified Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Florida, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey, and a Qualified Supervisor (QS) in both states with a Ph.D. in counseling and counselor education. Dr. Lipp has received qualified training in a multitude of supervised clinical settings, providing him with the competence to handle a wide array of mental health problems and client populations. He has years of clinical and work-related experience in the areas of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, personality disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Currently, Dr. Lipp specializes in and practices in the counseling of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, personality disorders, and co-occurring disorders.
Based on an integrative case conceptualization, Dr. Lipp passionately believes that the heart of counseling lies in the therapeutic relationship and the empowerment of all clients. Clinically, he intends to promote an environment that reconstructs and reinforces clients' objectives while achieving the goals of wellness, resiliency, autonomy, and, eventually, self-efficacy. "Theoretically, I counsel from a social constructivism paradigm, utilizing various cognitive and behavioral approaches within a transtheoretical framework. Ultimately, I believe in a holistic and integrative approach to counseling based on a strong therapeutic relationship from a wellness perspective."
Presently, Dr. Lipp is a practicing psychotherapist in South Florida with a primary research focus on deliberate practice, case conceptualization, and counselor competence. His other research interests are in the areas of addictions prevention, evidence-based practice, and client outcomes. Dr. Lipp is the Co-Chapter Faculty Advisor for the Theta Chi Sigma chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, past Vice President of the Beta Rho Chi chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, and former Graduate Student Representative for the Florida Association of Counselor Education and Supervision. In his free time, Dr. Lipp enjoys spending time with family and friends while staying physically active and savoring life. Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy. As an educator and supervisor, my teaching and supervision philosophies are guided by the words of the prolific Benjamin Franklin, who so eloquently stated, “Tell me and I forget; teach me and I remember; involve me and I learn.” Based on this statement, I believe in the efficacy of David A. Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory with Deliberate Practice as a theoretical framework and model for teaching and supervision. According to this model, individuals learn through discovery, action, and experience. Essentially, it is an epistemology that is based on the act of learning via environmental and community involvement, and I cannot think of a more effective way to teach and supervise the future of the counseling profession.
What advice would you give to a student entering The Chicago School? Don't be afraid to go outside your "comfort zone" while learning how to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Let go, trust the process, and enjoy the ride.
